Designed and modeled for the first time in 1753 by Kändler. It is a series of music-making and singing monkeys in period costumes. Often reshaped in the 19th century and partically produced in multiple versions.
The Monkey Orchestra, consisting of 21 figurines, is one of the most whimsical classics of Meissen Baroque. It was created in 1753 by Johann Joachim Kaendler, and revised in 1765/66 together with the modeller Peter Reinicke. In this piece, Kaendler humorously encodes an anti-feudal attitude that turns to the rational, free citizen.
